Halloween or Day of the Dead? Celebrate in Mexico

Entertainment 21/09/2023
Halloween or day of the dead
Halloween and Day of the Dead are two of the most fascinating and popular celebrations that go down in October. Despite their different cultural and geographic origins, these festivities have striking similarities and share the purpose of honoring the dead.

Halloween: A night of spooks and surprises

Halloween, celebrated on October 31st, is a Celtic tradition that has evolved into one of the most iconic celebrations in the world. The word "Halloween" comes from "All Hallows' Eve" or "Eve of All Saints." Originally, the Celts celebrated Samhain, a shindig marking the end of summer and the beginning of winter.

Day of the Dead: Honoring loved ones

Day of the Dead, mainly celebrated in Mexico from October 31st to November 2nd, is deeply rooted in Mexican culture. Its origins trace back to pre-Hispanic indigenous civilizations who revered their ancestors and believed in life after death.

Similarities between Halloween and Day of the Dead

Despite their differences in history and cultural focus, both celebrations have a central theme of honoring the deceased. While Halloween approaches more playfully, Day of the Dead treats it with respect and love, remembering beloved departed ones.

One thing to note about these festivities is that both promote family togetherness. On Halloween, this is reflected in the parties and the tradition of trick-or-treating, on the other hand, on Day of the Dead families come together to build altars in honor of loved ones who are no longer with us.

No matter what holiday we celebrate, Halloween and Day of the Dead remind us of the importance of enjoying these moments as a family while remembering those who are no longer with us.

In this regard, at Park Royal Hotels & Resorts, we offer a wide range of activities for you to have a unique experience with your loved ones, such as:
